Preface
The triennial IFSSH Congress is now the most prestigious academic conference for hand surgeons.
At this, the 11th IFSSH Congress, so many excellent lectures, symposia, and papers have been received that the organizing committee has decided to develop the congress proceedings into a textbook.
This book was produced to present current concepts of representative disorders in the hand surgery field and also to provide details of research being performed today and the experiences of hand surgeons in many countries, most of which will be presented at the 2010 IFSSH Congress in Seoul.
This book is intended for those with a certain level of knowledge of hand surgery who would like to update their knowledge of the subject and are interested in current issues and research topics. The introductions to chapters are written by colleagues at the KSSH (Korean Society for Surgery of the Hand), all of whom are recognized experts in their respective areas. The individual chapters provide extended abstracts of lectures, symposia, and papers presented by participants at the 11th IFSSH Congress, and are arranged in the order; etiology, epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, outcome, and prognosis. Readers may find that some portions of this book are based on the experiences of individual authors, rather than on evidence, and that some of the new surgical techniques described lack clinical data although they look creative. Nevertheless, we hope that you will find pleasure from your colleague’s ideas and experiences.
Hand surgery encompasses wide spectrums of disease and injury, in addition to the surgical techniques adopted, and thus, this book cannot cover every aspect of the subject. The reader may find that some chapters have many contributors, while others do not. We also feel that the book lacks a thorough editing and could not include as many pertinent illustrations as possible due to time limitations.
We sincerely thank all authors for their contributions to this book, and hope that their experiences and recent researches will allow the reader to understand current concepts of hand surgery and its current trends and concerns.
